Why is a neuroscientist interested in hospital design?

Julie is a clinical researcher and Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne. Julie has been working with people with stroke for 30 years. She Co-heads the Stroke Division at The Florey and leads a research team focused on development and testing of new interventions that aim to improve outcomes for people with stroke. Julie is also Director, NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery. Part of this endeavour is the study of how the built environment, particularly hospitals, can influence outcomes for patients, families and staff and this was the focus of her 2012 Churchill Fellowship. Since returning, Julie has led annual Optimising Health Environment Forums that attract individuals deeply interested in improving how we design, research and build healthcare environments.
